Basel's answer to Versailles in miniature. Villa Wenkenhof is where centuries of history meet the quiet drama of your most important day.
Why We Love Shooting Here
There are venues that photograph well, and then there are venues that feel like they were designed for the camera. Villa Wenkenhof is the latter. Every angle reveals something new – a symmetry you didn't notice, a play of light through centuries-old trees, the way the French garden frames a couple as if they were the subject of a Renaissance painting.
As wedding photographers based near Basel, we've had the privilege of seeing Wenkenhof in every season. Spring, when the gardens burst with colour and the air smells of cut grass and possibility. Autumn, when the English park glows amber and gold light filters through Richard Serra's monumental sculptures. Each season brings its own story, and that's exactly what we're here to tell.
What makes Wenkenhof truly special for us isn't just the architecture – though the Baroque facades are undeniably stunning. It's the quietness. Despite being just minutes from central Basel, the estate feels like a world apart. A private realm where time slows and every gesture between two people in love carries weight.
A Story Written in Stone
Villa Wenkenhof's history stretches back to the early Middle Ages – the name "Wahinhofen" first appeared around the year 751, predating even the first recorded mention of Riehen by over three centuries. Originally a manorial farming estate, the property evolved through the hands of nobility, merchants, and visionaries.
The New Wenkenhof – the stunning Baroque villa that stands today – was constructed in 1736 by Johannes Zäslin. Designed by architect Johann Carl Hemeling, it drew direct inspiration from French pleasure houses, particularly the Trianon de Porcelaine in the gardens of Versailles. That lineage shows in every detail: the symmetrical facades, the grand staircase with wrought-iron railings, the formal French garden that stretches before the villa like a green carpet rolled out for the occasion.
In the 19th century, architect Johann Jakob Stehlin added a second storey in the elegant Empire style, while the Clavel family later commissioned the restoration of the Baroque garden and the addition of the famous Reithalle – the riding hall that now serves as a striking event space. Today, the estate is managed by the Alexander Clavel Foundation, preserving its heritage while welcoming celebrations that honour the grandeur of the setting.
Where the Light Falls
As photographers, we think in light, composition, and emotion. Wenkenhof delivers all three in abundance. Here are the spots we gravitate toward again and again:
The French Garden. The symmetrical hedgerows and manicured pathways create depth that draws the eye straight to the couple. Morning light here is soft and diffused; golden hour is extraordinary, with long shadows stretching across the lawn like brushstrokes.
The Baroque Facade. The villa's front entrance – with its grand staircase and classical proportions – is pure editorial gold. We love positioning couples on the steps at dusk, when the warm interior glow contrasts with the blue twilight behind them.
The English Park. Wilder, more romantic, and dotted with monumental Richard Serra sculptures. The juxtaposition of raw steel against ancient trees creates images that feel both contemporary and timeless. This is where we take couples who want something less formal and more adventurous.
The Reithalle. The converted riding hall, with its soaring ceilings and industrial elegance, is perfect for reception photography. The scale of the space gives images a cinematic quality that smaller venues simply can't match.
Tips for Couples
Timing your portraits. We always recommend building in 60–90 minutes for couple portraits at Wenkenhof. There's simply too much beauty to rush. If possible, schedule a first look in the French garden before the ceremony, then return to the English park for golden hour after.
Ceremony options. The villa and its grounds offer both intimate and grand ceremony settings. The garden is exquisite for outdoor vows (weather permitting), while the interior rooms provide a refined backup with period details that need no additional decoration.
Logistics. Wenkenhof is located at Bettingerstrasse 121 in Riehen – easily reachable from Basel city centre in under 15 minutes. There's ample parking on-site, and the estate can accommodate celebrations of up to 200 guests, though we find smaller, more intimate weddings (50–100 guests) truly let the venue sing.
Seasons to consider. Late May through September offers the longest light and the gardens in full bloom. But don't overlook winter – a December wedding at Wenkenhof, with frost on the hedgerows and candlelight in the grand rooms, carries a kind of magic that warm months can't replicate.
Work with local vendors. The Basel region has an exceptional network of luxury wedding planners, florists, and caterers who know Wenkenhof intimately. We're always happy to share our trusted vendor recommendations.
Your Wenkenhof Wedding with The Roleas
We approach every Wenkenhof wedding the same way: quietly, observantly, and with deep respect for both the couple and the venue. Our editorial style is a natural fit for this setting – clean compositions, natural light, moments captured as they unfold rather than staged.
Whether you're planning an intimate civil ceremony in the garden or a grand celebration in the Reithalle, we bring the same attention to detail. Because at a venue like Wenkenhof, the details are the story. The way light catches a veil against the Baroque facade. A stolen glance beneath the Serra sculptures. Laughter echoing through halls that have hosted celebrations for nearly three centuries.
These are the images we live for. And Wenkenhof never fails to deliver them.
"Villa Wenkenhof is where history and romance converge – a venue that doesn't need decoration, only love."
