Domaine Goldenmatt wedding venue in the Vosges mountains, Alsace – rustic luxury at altitude

Domaine Goldenmatt

Vosges Mountains, Alsace

At 960 metres, the world falls away. No neighbours. No noise. Just mountains, forests, and the kind of silence that makes every whispered vow feel like a prayer.

Why We Love Shooting Here

We've shot a wedding at Domaine Goldenmatt. David and Yana's spiritual celebration remains one of the most moving days we've ever documented. So when we say we love this place, it's not marketing – it's memory.

Goldenmatt sits beneath the Grand Ballon – the highest point in the Vosges Regional Nature Park – on the Alsatian slope, where the mountains meet the sky. The estate sprawls across 10 hectares of forest and meadow, entirely private, with not a single neighbour in sight. At the end of a one-kilometre forest path, you arrive at something that feels less like a venue and more like a sanctuary.

As photographers, we live for environments that tell a story before we even pick up our cameras. Goldenmatt does this effortlessly. The rustic stone walls. The panoramic south-facing terrace with views stretching across the Alsatian plain to the Ballons. The ancient pines that filter afternoon light into cathedral-like beams. Every corner of this estate whispers, and we're here to translate those whispers into images.

The Estate

Goldenmatt is a place of contrasts – rustic soul with luxury bones. The main house is a charming mountain property with five comfortable bedrooms, a luxury dormitory, generous living spaces, and a spa. It's the kind of place where your wedding party can gather the evening before, cook together in the fully equipped kitchen, and fall asleep to the sound of wind through the pines.

Outside, a large covered marquee provides shelter for dining and celebration, while the panoramic terrace is the undeniable star. Facing south, it catches the sun from morning until well past golden hour, with views that make city life feel like a distant memory. On a clear day, you can see the Ballons des Vosges stretching into the horizon – a backdrop that no florist could improve upon.

And then there's the chapel. The Marian chapel – currently undergoing restoration – adds a layer of sacred heritage to the estate. For couples seeking a spiritual dimension to their celebration, as David and Yana did, this space carries a weight and a beauty that purpose-built venues simply cannot replicate.

The estate accommodates up to 120 guests for daytime events, with the intimate overnight capacity making it ideal for smaller, closer celebrations where every guest is truly cherished.

Where the Light Falls

Goldenmatt isn't a venue with designated photo spots. It's a venue where every spot is a photo spot. That said, here's where we find the magic:

The Forest Path. That one-kilometre approach through ancient pines? It's extraordinary for portraits. Dappled light, earthy tones, and the sense of walking deeper into something sacred. We've created some of our most intimate images here – couples holding hands as the forest closes around them like a secret.

The Panoramic Terrace. During golden hour, the south-facing terrace becomes a stage. The Alsatian plain glows warm below, the sky shifts through peach and lavender, and couples are silhouetted against one of the most dramatic natural horizons in the region. This is where we capture the wide, cinematic frames that anchor a wedding gallery.

The Meadows. The 10-hectare estate includes open meadows that, in summer, fill with wildflowers and tall grass. The light here is soft and directionless – perfect for the dreamy, editorial portraits that define our style. There's a freedom to shooting in open meadow that structured gardens can't offer.

The Chapel. Even in its current state of restoration, the Marian chapel provides a setting of quiet reverence. Stone walls, filtered light, the weight of centuries. For ceremony photography, it's profoundly moving.

Under the Stars. At 960 metres, with no light pollution, Goldenmatt offers night skies that city couples have often never truly seen. We always encourage couples to step outside after dark for a few long-exposure portraits under the stars. The results speak for themselves.

Tips for Couples

Getting there. Goldenmatt is approximately 25 minutes from Thann and about 90 minutes from Basel. The final approach is a forest road – charming but narrow. We recommend arranging shuttle transport for guests and allowing extra time for arrivals. The journey itself is part of the experience.

Weekend bookings. The estate operates on a privatised booking model – weekends run from Friday afternoon to Monday morning. This is a gift, not a limitation. It means your wedding becomes a weekend retreat. Guests arrive Friday, settle in, explore the mountains. Saturday is the celebration. Sunday is slow breakfast, mountain walks, and reluctant goodbyes. Some of our favourite images come from these unguarded before-and-after moments.

Catering. Goldenmatt provides the venue and accommodation, but catering is brought in separately. The fully equipped kitchen supports professional caterers, and the estate's proximity to Alsace's culinary heartland means exceptional food is never far away. Think local wines, artisan cheese, Alsatian tarte flambée – the region's gastronomy is a celebration in itself.

Weather considerations. Mountain weather is mountain weather – gloriously unpredictable. The covered marquee provides an essential backup for outdoor celebrations, and we've learned that some of the most atmospheric wedding photos happen when clouds roll through the valleys. Don't fear the fog. Embrace it.

Seasons. Late May through September is peak season, with July and August offering the warmest temperatures and longest light. But autumn at Goldenmatt – when the Vosges forests turn copper and gold – is quietly extraordinary. And a winter wedding, with snow on the peaks and firelight inside? We'd love to shoot that.

Our Goldenmatt Story

When David and Yana asked us to photograph their wedding at Goldenmatt, we knew it would be special. What we didn't know was how deeply the place itself would become part of their story.

Their celebration was spiritual, communal, and deeply personal. Vows exchanged where centuries of faith had echoed. A forest that served as their cathedral. Friends gathered in circles under open sky, stories told, laughter echoing off mountains that had witnessed a thousand similar joys.

You can see the full story in our David & Yana wedding feature. It captures not just a couple, but a place – and the way the two became inseparable in our memory.

That's what Goldenmatt does. It doesn't host your wedding. It holds it. And when you look back at your images, you'll feel the mountain air and pine needles and starlight all over again.
